The Uberfungus: No hope in sight...

Description

In the year 20--, a metoerite crashed into Saudia Arabia, near a small village. Within hours, all contact with the village was lost. A team was sent to investigate, and what they found is too graphic to describe here. Oh all right. Apparently every organic life form had been... consumed by a fungus on the interior of the meteorite, which had split open when it impacted. When they took their uniforms off, they saw a speck of the fungus on them. They took them to the local scientist, who referred them to researchers from universities from around the world. A by-product of its life cycle was "a chemical compound not found on this Earth," and it was deadly to all organic life. One speck had the potential to kill off an entire city the size of New York in exactly three days, two hours, thirty-two minutes, and 24 seconds, give or take a few. Unbeknownst to the researchers, the fungus back at the village was being spirited away by a terrorist group to use as a bioweapon against the United States and "all else who oppose us." And so it began... Times Square, New Years Eve... They didn't use one speck, the dumped a whole sackful on the revelers below from their stolen crop duster. They were shot down by the Air Force an hour later, as they were an unidentified aircraft refusing to respond to hails and tried to avoid them. Also, whipping out guns and trying to shoot down the fighters may have tipped the pilots do bag them. Just a hunch. The fungus spread like wildfire, being on the clothes of refugees, spreading all over the world in three days. It made the 1918 influenza epidemic look like a pox party. The by-products of their life cycle were killing thousands a day, and people were found dead, chocked by the fungus that had started growing in their throats and consuming their inert corpse. The process took three hours and 47 minutes to consume an individual. Worse yet, mauraders stalked the countryside, in search of victims to rob. A group of brave souls ventured into a small suburb, to see what could be salvaged. What they found was very disheartening: the whole neighborhood was snowed in, except the snow was the fungus, then known, as a reference to a movie and book about another pathogen from outer space, as the Andromeda Strain, except this one wasn't confined to a facility, but throughout the whole world. The Andromeda Strain at this point was using the fruit and flowers to lure airborne organisms to consume them and propogate itself. While this was happening, the fungus the researchers had unwittingly brought back home was decimating the populations of their countries. The only relatively safe place was the countryside, and with the refugees streaming there, the fungus would inevitibly arrive, and then... Game over man, game over. Earth would be consumed. The picture is somewhere around day 2. NOTE: I referenced The Andromeda Strain, because: one, it's a great book/movie, two, similar theme: virus from outer space. Three, I did it because I can and I'm just that awesome. Thanks for reading. And yes that is smoke from the background, from the military attempting saturation bombing to destroy the fungus (it only spread it from the force of the explosion) Resistance is futile. You will be suffocated or choked to death and eaten.

Okay, the story is bigger than the picture. Okay. This contest has been over how long?
